"After its acquisition of Netball into its streaming portfolio this year, Telstra is letting its customers stream NRL, AFL and Netball on Android and iOS devices completely data free. Non-Telstra customers will need to pay to view content in the apps, with "Live Passes" for both the AFL and Netball apps costing AU$13 per month, or AU$15 for NRL."
So with ARPU for the Telcos in Australia falling. Is this Telstra firing the first gun to win market share?
1. Free for Telstra customer but non Telstra customers will be charged.
2. Telstra trying to encourage streaming of live NRL/AFL games on mobile phones to create consumer habit then charge for live streaming of other videos on their phone?
3. Be interesting to see how other Telcos like Vodafone & Optus will respond?
4. Obviously these Telcos don't want to lose money and give away free data as there is expensive infrastructure costs to set up and maintain.
5. Will we see Australia moving rapidly into the sponsored data space & I wonder if a deal will be struck between SYT and these Telcos?
Hmm interesting...thanks for sharing this article.
