As far as Buy transactions go, the only source of Intel we have to definitively know who purchased are the self-disclosures that are required of substantial holders. Basically, substantial holders are subjected to disclose more info about their activities that anyone else. As far as BAML goes, we can be certain that they are not shorting because Appendix A would have at least shown some Sell transactions. It didn't. In fact, it clearly showed precisely the opposite (i.e. 35m purchased). You can't say that we cannot see a buy transaction when the purchaser already self-disclosed it!

As far as shorting intel goes, the first port of call is ShortMan. It's worth noting, however, that ShortMan has its limitations, which need to be factored in:
- Firstly, it only shows the ASX trade volumes in the Trade volume column (per footnote and Notes link on bottom of page). The 5.7m trade Vol shown on 17 Oct was for ASX only. My broker portal's daily Vol data (ASX and Chi-X) shows ~42m daily Vol for that day, which suggests that Chi-X was responsible for the other 36.3m that day. It further implies that BAML's 35m purchase on 17 Oct occurred through Chi-X.
- Secondly, there are time lags associated with reporting Gross shorts on ShortMan. Initially, the data is collected/reported from ASX only (the next day), but more comprehensive (official) data comes from ASIC on a T+4 time lag basis. Either way, this point is moot in this instance because BAML has already self-disclosed (on Appendix A of today's F603) that it was a buyer on 35m shares on 17 Oct.
