Good post Dave. This is a real worry as our universities have been going downhill since the Dawkins days as political parties of both colours have sought to save money at the expense of our prime resource, the intellectual capital of the country.

What is required is a long hard look at where we are going. Academic standards need to be boosted, the attitude to research needs to be rethought. eg the linking of funding of all research to commercial outcomes has a negative effect since much useful progress comes from so called basic research.

In the end, the community will need to say to our pollies that we should be spending more of taxpayers money in the tertiary sector.
