Some home truths starting to register. To build a fault tolerant computer is going to take 1000s of extremely robust physical qubits. From which they hope to construct an order of magnitude smaller number of logical qubits. This is the theory that IBM, Google etc are also staying with. Amazon looked at it and decided it is not achievable in a commercial sense. Fighting with the laws of thermodynamics takes a lot of energy to suck the entropy out by extreme cooling and shielding. They might win at this one day, but not a practical happy ending in sight for years. Psiquantum might isolate this requirement for cooling into a smaller unit but it is still crucial and limiting.
How did the federal government and science advisor's not pay attention to the open ended nature of this fault tolerant quest? Did they not realise that more funding would end up being needed. When AXE was supposed to be offering advice and giving voice to quantum tech direction, were they ignored?
Anyhoo we can say that AXE didn't get carried away with the hype and stayed grounded in the details. I learned a lot from the tech updates here. How AXE recognised that for any hope of quantum tech being harnessed for consumers, it needed a different approach. Mo's cautious considered approach was wise at the time. If we had not been shown the painstaking R&D steps needed, we would be fooled by the hype. Now it's a new phase for the quantum space and also for investor expectations.
