Given they just can't make stuff up, especially this type of stuff with this type of venture, then the person giving the answer must have been basing it on some information transmitted to him. Maybe not an accurate retransmission, but the foundation of the statement would seem to be - that there were strong fumes...
Not particularly definitive but at least encouraging.
