So where is the truth again?

    Cut'n'Paste...( http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=54659 )

"While this is the current subject of political debate between the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, (who says we can't) and the Federal Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, (who says we can) the truth is that wherever they come from, most boat people use Indonesia as a launching point for Australian waters. Indonesia's president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has indicated towing boats back into Indonesian waters is not an option and it is likely a regional summit will be held to discuss a joint solution for the issue of the maritime trade of asylum seekers.

1st sentence: Kevin Rudd suggesting to turn back the boats using the Australian Navy. Seems Julia Gillard thought you could too* ( http://www.theaustralian.com.au/opinion/pm-turns-around-her-own-boatpeople-solution/story-e6frg6zo-1225888698489 ). So did Chris Bowen. Howard turned back a few boats, a tradition started by Malcolm Fraser, carried on by Hawke and Keating.

But apparently Tony Abbott can't turn boats back, despite it having been done before by Labor and Liberal governments, alike.

    * "THE navy has turned back four boats to Indonesia. They were in sea-worthy shape and arrived in Indonesia. It has made a very big difference to people-smuggling that that happened. It has disrupted people-smuggling operations tremendously, that people who have paid actually ended up back there. We think that it is important - important from a humanitarian perspective and important from a security perspective - that we do everything we can to disrupt people-smuggling."

Another myth I'd like to bust:

[Myth 8: They don't assimilate or contribute

REALITY: Refugees have been coming to Australia for decades and the first big wave of boat people, from Vietnam in the 1970s, have proven to be successful migrants who have assimilated and added much to Australian society. After surviving perilous journeys by their courage and strength, these people epitomise the qualities admired and rewarded in Australian society.

Historically, refugees have contributed to the economic, civil and social fabric of Australian life and their success can be found in all fields of endeavour and marked by their presence on the New Year and Queen's birthday honours lists.]

    Yeah lol. OK.

Maybe the Vietnamese who arrived did integrate and contribute. The Iraqis and Afghanis are certainly not. ( http://www.news.com.au/national-news/a-world-of-long-term-welfare-for-refugees/story-e6frfkvr-1226050161428 ) "

And to debunk some more of the myths: http://catallaxyfiles.com/2013/07/08/asylum-seekers-myths/#more-43867

""A news article with some facts in it - unheard of."

    Indeed, unheard of still.
