Teva's first opportunity to leave the trial was after the 1st interim. I think they did what they were contractually obliged to do up to that point. Having reached the 1st interim they took stock and, with all the other alternatives at their disposal, they made an understandable decision to move on.
There are posts on this group from October 2014 that predict this very outcome almost to a tee. I don't therefore see how this can be described as a "fanatical reversal of their culture" or showing any lack of intelligence.
