Not sure. In the late 70's Westinghouse (WHC) was working on 50MW module based construction - i heard about it when i was looking at some PLC controller applications that had originally been developed for this program.
WHC were using the old principle that smaller systems are controllable systems, i.e it is easier to reliably build 20 50MW parallel systems than one 1000MW monster.
Never found out why it was dropped (apart from the general flight from nuclear at the time).
I think a sustained move toward a low carbon future will help all of re-think our shibboleths, including nuclear. The other technologies all have their issues - maybe (maybe) fission is a significant proportion of the answer.
LOL'ed extensively at the suggestion to chuck old reactor cores down the holes. Maybe that's a good use for H-1???
