War started in 2014. As Nato commander says here. Nato have been pouring weapons into Ukraine since 2014 by his own admission.
So Feb 2022 was just an expansion of the War.
You forget that Minsk Accords (peace agreements) which was to stop the war, WAS NOT being implemented by both the Poroshenko Gov and Zelenskyy Gov, and was not being enforced by both France and Germany.
That agreement was to expire on 21st February 2022.
After that, there was nothing to protect the people of Donbas from a full on assault of the Ukraine military.
