Wether the perception is correct or not the mainstream media has latched on to the story of young people being unable to afford their first home. Rightly or wrongly, negative gearing is seen as one of the main causes of this. The problem for the coalition is that if they maintain the status quo they will be seen to be pandering to the wealthy boomer generation. I would still be surprised though to see the coalition axe nebative gearing- they wouldn't want to alienate those that vote for them. On the other hand they may go for the ng axe and hope that the boomers still vote for them and they gain some young voters. Who knows. But I would not be surprised to see Labor saying the will axe ng and using it as a key plank for the next election.
Demographic change is beginning to really hurt conservative governments around the world and the coalition would be accutely aware of this.
