According to the weather bureau's website, we are entering an
'El Nino' in Australia which in theory, should mean a 'drier
wet' season than normal. However, it is all very hit and miss stuff and we will never really know til the 'wet' arrives (and it usually starts around the Mt Isa to Tennant Creek area in mid October but constant rain usually not til December).

Having said all that and having looked at the Bureau's website, they stated in one table that 1997 / 1998 was an
    'El Nino' season.
Yet, Territorians will remember that this was the year (1997 /1998 wet season) that Katherine (325 km south of Darwin and 700 km north of Tennant Creek) had the ' 1 in 100 year' floods - Katherine river bridge leading into town is about 20 metres above the river but water rose several metres above that and flooded the town. We had saltwater crocs swimming down the main street. This was all the result of a huge rain depression that sat over the Katherine area for 3 weeks - it rained day and night during that time. Gotta love cyclones when they turn into rain depressions over land....and don't move!

So, bottom line seems to be, we will not know if it is going to be a 'drier wet' season til the time arrives.
