Australia will appeal to the international trade umpire over China's decision to impose trade-ending tariffs of up to 220 per cent on Australian wine.
Key points:
It is the second time in six months Australia has called in the World Trade Organization (WTO), after the former trade minister Simon Birmingham refered China to the WTO in December for the crippling tariffs applied to the barley trade.
- Trade Minister Dan Tehan said China's actions have caused "serious harm" to Australia's wine industry
- Wine exports to China fell from $1.1 billion to $20 million when tariffs were imposed
- The WTO process will likely take several years
Today, Trade Minister Dan Tehan said the Australian government would vigorously defend the interests of the wine industry, accused of anti-competitive behaviour by China.
Last year, China imposed tariffs on Australian barley over similar allegations of anti-competitive behaviour, accusing the Australian government of providing subsidies to grain growers.
Overnight, Reuters reported that China was now offering subsidies to its own grain growers.
"China will grant $3.1 billion in subsidies to grain farmers this year to offset soaring fertiliser and diesel costs" Reuters reported.
