ALMOST one in four Australians were born overseas, the highest proportion in more than 100 years, official figures showed today.
Out of a population of 20 million, 4.8 million or 24 per cent, were direct immigrants, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said. People born in Britain made up the largest group of overseas-born Australians, with 1.1 million people or 6.0 per cent of the total population.
Other major groups were from New Zealand (2.0 per cent), Italy, mainland China and Vietnam (each 1.0 per cent).
While almost half of the overseas-born population were from Europe, that figure had declined over the past eight years and migration from other regions had increased, the bureau said.
Sudanese-born people were the fastest growing group, increasing by an average 26 per cent per year over the past eight years, but starting from a low base of only 2600 people in 1996.
Advertisement: The next fastest growing group was from Afghanistan (12 per cent per year) and Iraq (11 per cent per year), the bureau said. The largest net addition to Australia's population between 1996 and 2004 was from New Zealand (up by 127,000).
China contributed 60,800, South Africa 47,400 and India 43,800.
