Pacnet fans speculation over AAPT

THE Hong Kong telecom Pacnet has made it clear it plans "aggressive growth" in the region, fuelling speculation it is interested in buying Telecom New Zealand's Australian subsidiary AAPT.
A Pacnet spokesman said the privately held company was "looking at a lot of different opportunities within the region".
If combined with further transactions, it could mark an attempt to begin consolidating the vast tier two and three Australian [internet service provider] market," it said.
Despite the appeal of AAPT's fibre assets acquired with PowerTel in 2007, we are unsure of Pacnet's propensity to take on a consumer business with 300,000 subscribers," Goldman Sachs said.
