pahang gov't has no power over lynas plant

KUANTAN -- The Pahang Government does not have the power to approve the construction or close the rare earth metal-processing factory in Gebeng, Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob said today.

He said the project, owned by Lynas Corporation Ltd, was approved by the international trade and industry ministry.

This followed the ministry's satisfaction over a detailed study carried out by the Atomic Energy Licencing Board (AELB) on the safety levels of radiation emitting from the factory.

"I wonder why certain parties are staging protests and condemning the state government. We are not the one who approved the project, so, what is the fuss in telling us to close it (factory)," he said when winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address in the state assembly sitting here today...
