The N2A class covers narcotic analgesic products. These drugs are primarily used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe, severe acute and chronic pain. In contrast, non-narcotic analgesics, such as aspirin, paracetamol, thenon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors, are primarily used formild-to-moderate pain and are classified elsewhere. Some narcotic products are classified outside the N2A class,including weak narcotic derivatives such as tramadol, OTC medications, and products used for indications otherthan pain, such as cough (e.g. low-dose codeine), induction and maintenance of anaesthesia (e.g. alfentanil) andopioid dependence (e.g. buprenorphine).
