Have you ever lied? Residents may be able to verbalise their pain but who says they are telling the truth? Also you ask one person to rate pain between 1 to 10 they are going to give a different rating then another person with the same pain. Then there could be up to 10-20 nurses possibly assessing the resident over the time they are doing the checks. Each once of the nurses will interpret everything differently as well. Painchek provide us with a consistent and reliable pain measurement over time and it doesn't matter what the residents says or how they interpret it

Let me give an example or two

A lovely 90+ year old lady, she is a very proud lady and she likes to be very independent but she is deteriorating. She has a bad fall in the shower because she doesn't like anyone helping her shower. From the fall she has issues around her hip and a bump on her head. We do a pain assessment and check vitals etc which is standard practice after a fall.

We ask her about pain and she says no I am fine just a little bit of bruising. We can clearly tell she is in much more pain then that but she is not wanting to receive help and she is now also worried she won't be able to shower herself again. We suggest to just give some panadol just to help with the pain a bit and she agrees.

We come back again to check on her and do another pain assessment. She said once again she is fine and the panadol helped. After the pain assessment though the pain has not reduced at all. We then have a discussion with her about her pain and say we know your in pain etc and organise stronger pain relief for her.

Now she is a fully verbal resident but because of a number of factors she wasn't telling the truth. We are able to get her pain accurately rated and constantly monitor that pain. After she has the stronger pain relief the next time we checked her, her pain had dropped dramatically.

There could be 3 different nurses all doing these tests as well but they are able to go back and make sure she is improving and not getting worse.

Another quick example

A 90+ male was complaining of pain, he has done this before and often tries to get more of his medication earlier. So he is assessed and it comes back normal, this goes on his file and people can see that he was putting it on so they might not trust him. A few days later he does the same thing, after the pain assessment we can see there is slight pain, nothing to warrant early medication though. This progresses overtime and gets worse and worse and we can see that his pain is increasing and getting severe.

The doctor is in at this time so we go to the doctor with all the test results over the last day, he can clearly see the results and the time stamp so it helps him determine how quick it has come on etc. The doctor adjusted his medication and then he is monitored to make sure his pain has been managed correctly now.

There is two examples of how non dementia very verbal patients have the benefit of it! Now without Painchek yes some of this would of happened but it could of easily been missed if the nurse wasn't skilled, or new the residents often lied etc. Or the nurse didn't put it in the system or lost the paper she was doing it on! Painchek makes it all easily accessible reliable and quick.

We have over 100 residents not all of them are going to be stories like above but it is a very beneficial tool to have there in case we need anything.

I have not even touched on the cost and time saving factors especially when you use it with a system like healthmetrics (Our software is sadly not going to integrate at this stage).

In regards to the big players I have heard whispers who are trialing it and who they are looking to sign first (This is pure whispers through the aged care grape vine though! It is a small industry). I still believe we are looking at announcements maybe 1-3 months away with implementation across all the sites to be rolled out over a 6-12 month period so will be a 12 months period before the full revenue comes in. I hope that I am wrong though but as I said the long term is what everyone should be looking at.
