The head of ASIO also did not make a compelling case. Serious Jihadists will use proxies and VPNs to bypass ASIO surveillance. These increased data retention logs are more likely to catch cheating spouses than serious criminals. The marginal benefit of increased data to interrogate will be far outweighed by the loss of privacy.

Perhaps the intent really is to help Woodside Petroleum be better able to spy on East Timor to help its mates like Alexander Downer.

And before anyone jumps at me, the last point is tongue in cheek.
