Israel bombs Syrian training camp
Security Council convenes emergency session over retaliatory missile attack

Israeli warplanes bombed a suspected terrorist training camp in Syria in retaliation for the suicide bombing in the northern city of Haifa that killed 19 Israelis and wounded 55 others.

F-16 fighter jets dropped several bombs and fired missiles at the Ain Saheb base 15 kilometers northwest of Damascus. The facility belongs to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz, but terrorists from Hamas, Islamic Jihad and al-Qaida also used the camp for training.

The Israeli army reported one of the buildings hit in the raid was a weapons workshop used by Islamic Jihad. One man was reported injured.

Islamic Jihad denies having bases in Syria.

"We do not have any training camps or bases in Syria or any other country," spokesman Abu Emad El-Refaei told the Al-Jazeera television network. "All our bases are inside the Palestinian occupied territories."

According to Israeli military officials, the base was targeted because Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the Haifa bombing.

"The Islamic Jihad, like other terror organizations ... enjoys the support and backing of countries in the region – foremost Iran and Syria," said an Israeli army statement. "Syria is a country that sponsors terror and constantly tries to sabotage any attempt to achieve quiet and stability in the region. Israel will not accept the rules of the game that the terrorists are trying to dictate, and will act with determination against all who harm its citizens, in accordance with the right to self defense and defense of the state."

The statement said "the army has started operating against those behind the attack, those who support [terror] and those who use the strategy of terror in order to harm citizens of Israel."

In response to the airstrike, Hamas vowed revenge.
