Getting desperate now.
Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin has accused Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama of associating with terrorists.
She was referring to William Ayers, a member of the radical 1960s group the Weathermen, who placed bombs at the Pentagon and the Capitol to protest the Vietnam War.
Mr Ayers supported Senator Obama's first run for public office in 1995.
With the Republicans trailing in the polls a month before the US election, Mrs Palin said it was time to take the gloves off in the campaign.
Speaking at a fundraiser in Englewood, Colorado, Mrs Palin told supporters Senator Obama "is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country".
The Obama campaign described Ms Palin's guilt-by-association attack as "desperate and false".
"Governor Palin's comments, while offensive, are not surprising, given the McCain campaign's statement this morning that they would be launching Swiftboat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nation's economic ills," said Senator Obama's spokesman Hari Sevugan.
