Clive Palmer has launched a stinging personal attack on Prime Minister Tony Abbott's chief-of-staff, Peta Credlin, suggesting the Paid Parental Leave scheme is only Government policy for her benefit.

'Why should Australian citizens and businesses be taxed, and working women discriminated against, just so the Prime Minister's chief of staff can receive a massive benefit when she gets pregnant', Mr Palmer asked an almost-empty parliamentary chamber.

Leader of the house Christopher Pyne quickly seized on the attack, calling it 'cowardly' and 'ignorant' and called on the Palmer United Party Leader to apologise.

The government has also pointed to the fact that Ms Credlin, as a public servant, would already receive a generous PPL payment.
