PS: Perhaps the sensible thing to do is to process some of our iron ore and sell
it into other markets besides China so that if the USA decides to impose trade
sanctions on China later that it won't send us broke.
I know that Bluescope and One Steel have had problems competing with China
but our Government should be more proactive in supporting local steel making
by giving preference to local product and applying anti-dumping WTO regulations
where necessary. And, besides, the CO2 tax which triggered the closure of One Steel
has now been removed.
It simply does not sound logical for China to buy our Iron Ore
and Coking Coal, ship them to China, smelt it into re-iron and mild steel and then
ship it back here at a profit and cheaper than what we can do it here. Are we
proper mugs or something?
