Bougainville elects new leader PORT MORESBY June 10, 2010 .Papua New Guinea's former ambassador to China, John Momis, has been elected as the next president of the autonomous Bougainville region after beating incumbent and former revolutionary James Tanis.
It is hoped Mr Momis, 71, will bring prosperity to the struggling island province that fought a decade-long civil war with PNG from 1987. The former priest will try to speed up weapons disposal and broker an agreement on the controversial Rio-Tinto Panguna mine, the massive gold and copper mine that sparked the civil war and now holds the key to Bougainville's economic future.
Electoral officials declared Mr Momis the poll winner yesterday. Less than a quarter of Bougainville's current MPs have retained their seats.
