Burnet Institute and Austin Research Institute: Joining together for a healthier world

The Burnet Institute is delighted to announce it has merged with the Austin Research Institute effective from 1 January 2006, creating a super-institute under the continued name of the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health (Burnet Institute).

The merger will combine the strengths of both organisations. It will position the Burnet Institute as one of the top five medical research institutes in Australia, and the leading infectious diseases research and public health group in the region.

The work undertaken by the dynamic team of researchers at the Austin Research Institute has significant synergies with the Burnet Institute’s work, particularly in the areas of infectious diseases, immunology and immunotherapy. The merger will enhance the research currently undertaken by Burnet, as well as allowing us to explore other research and development opportunities, particularly in cancer research.

In the short-term, the institutes will continue to operate from their existing locations, with the staff of the Austin Research Institute expected to relocate to the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct in 2008
