After the 2001 collapse they also got into bartering.
Argentinians were only allowed to get x amount of money from their bank accounts per month. And apparently, you sometimes had to search for an ATM that actually had notes. Those in the know (wealthy) saw what was coming and got their money out of Argentina before the collapse.

Those that held precious metals had something to sell to help in their survival.



You hear more commentators now saying Greece will default. A return to the drachma which is worth less than the Euro will help their economy.
