the other alternative is to put a parachute on the whole plane which is loopey
On the F111 the pilots didn't eject, their capsule was separated from the plane and was parachuted down. If they landed in water there were automatic righting mechanisms and flotation bags so the pilots could remain dry. A very complex system so I doubt it has been done since.
