If you want to get an idea of what happens, just look up any major established pharmaceutical or medical devices company - you'll find a long list of expired, rejected, or withdrawn patent applications... many of which are obviously trying to show some kind of new invention that improves efficacy, or new application to expand or enter new markets.
Just bear in mind some of the names of companies you are looking for may not appear in the patents - sometimes they set up holding companies owned by the company that patents are registered under.
