They did not take profits when they were available, and cut losses to protect capital.
It is obvious they was waiting for the upturn that did not come.
This is called the paralysis suffered by people who think they are investors but in fact are gamblers.
Investors know when something is a bad investment - if there are no dividends and the price of a stock is coming down investors do not touch them. The company is not in profit. So no investor will touch a company with a barge pole if it is not making net profit and paying dividends let alone the reduction in the stock price.
