Cities and the bush is not safe. In a past life I owned a station south of Bourke. The local plod advised me to never venture out without a gun because the remotes now harbor crim's, bushwhackers, thieves and seedy types who love to operate in the absence of witnesses and cameras. Experiences proved that to be true. Sad to say this, but these days when you're 200 klics from the nearest police station, on your own in the back of buggery and the sat phone can't find a connection, then a gun it's your next best friend. The reality is that much of the criminality that goes on out in no man's land, including the occasional stand-off with armed poachers and thieves is seldom reported to the police or the media.
And if anyone askes, the white cretins/crim's/poaches were the worse perpetrators - the blacks not so much.
