A man has suffered serious head injuries after an argument over a parking spot spun out of control in the busy late night shopping hours at Whitford City Shopping Centre.

Police spokesman Samuel Dinnison said a fight erupted at the shopping centre car park about 7pm after two men spotted the same parking bay.

A verbal argument quickly turned violent, and a 39-year-old man from Wanneroo threw a punch at another 39-year-old man, from Gnangara, Mr Dinnision said.

After being struck, the victim fell against his car and hit the ground, where he suffered a fractured skull.

He was brought to Joondalup Health Campus but later transferred to the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital. He underwent surgery overnight and remains in a serious but stable condition.

The Wanneroo man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and will appear in Joondalup Magistrates Court on March 3.
