The apparent disproportion of the protocol shows the anachronism of the institution. Many people wouldn't take 15 days off work if their husband/wife died. Yet for this institution (the monarch) which is at best tangential to most of our lives we're supposedly too distraught to move on with our lives for that long. The monarch's death should be covered in the way that the deaths of significant people are always covered: with condolence motions, then get on with the business of the parliament.
