I find it unbelievable that the Japanese appear to have lost control of their nuclear reactors
Why aren't passive safety measure mandatory for nuclear.
That is they shut themselves down under out of ordinary conditions (without human intervention)
There are many ways to shut a reactor down - thru moderators, neutron absorbers, removal of the control rods
On detection of excessive temperator -> some or all these measures should be employed
Even with the loss of power these should work i.e they are held in operation place only when power is available (when power removed they disengage mechanically)
But it seems like this is not in place in Japan - so the reactor is out of control with too much radiation/heat for humans to turn it off. And the reactor may have already gone into meltdown (the floor of the reactor has melted)
Someone explain to me why passive safety is not employed
Maybe I am missing something ?
