As far as I recall the announcement indicated that it was only a small number of MEMS devices themselves that were provided to Bar Ilan. These did not need to be integrated to ASICs but were to be controlled by electronics provided by Bar Ilan (?). From what I read this translates the video signal from a camera into a spatial 2D map addressing the elements so that pulses of air from the MEMS elements at ultrasonic frequencies could be directed onto the eye in the same 2D array as the map, i.e. projecting an "image" onto the eye's surface. This was presumably the same arrangement that Bar Ilan had been doing with electrical pulses from electrodes. Presumably the electronics that performed this could also be used to address the MEMS device.

It should be pointed out that it was made clear by Fred Bart in his announcement that AP's tech team are playing a very minor part in this project other than to providing advice to Bar Ilan's team about the MEMS device itself and its interfacing requirements. In particular it was described as not being a distraction from the company's main work program.
