It is common knowledge that the intermediary role Visa, MasterCard etc. play is antiquated to say the least.
They are taking a cut merely to act as a payment processor between institutions.
Technology will undermine this current role fairly quickly.
Ironically, most of the big bets on MasterCard and Visa are based on the continual rise of electronic payments.
I guess they just don't grasp that although electronic payments will continue to rise - this doesn't mean it will be facilitated by antiquated technology currently employed by MasterCard and Visa.
