the pillory worked really well.,,,.. out in the middle of the market place, people forbidden to give food or water but didn't stop them throwing rotten eggs or whatnot. the shame and having ones face known so vividly, sitting with feet and hands immobilised for 3 days/nights. no place to hide in the community in those days.
