Here is a heart warming story about the people of Ipswich and their attempt to honour their First Lady, Pauline. She was so much in the forefront of Ipswich minds a few years ago that the citizens held a meeting to decide how best the city could commemorate her. It was decided to erect a statue of her in the main street. The discussions began. How big should the statue be, what material should it be made of steel, glass, stone? It was finally decided to employ a noted carver and carve the statue out of wood. The search began for a suitable piece of wood to do their Pauline justice. For a whole year they searched and searched but nowhere, just nowhere could they find a piece of wood thick enough. So the plan was abandoned.
