There is significant disinvestment occurring across a range of funds in North America. The US retail investors have withdrawn funds for 21 weeks straight with total withdrawals of around $US70 billion. Fund cash levels are very low at about 3.5% so withdrawals can mean share sales.
The aggressive nature of the selling - driving the price vertically down to $A2.57 - was indicative of "get me some cash".
If it was news driven this type of selling would have "charge me with insider trading" written on the contract notes.
