Gee, I was just reading about the strike in Shougang's io mine in Peru last October....
The strike began over the miners’ demand for a monthly wage increase of 7 soles (about US$2) a month. Union leaders and management agreed to an increase of 2.90 soles (about 82c) a month, but the workers rejected the offer as insufficient.
"It can't be right that a subcontracted worker who does the same job as me earns 25 soles ($7.75) daily, half my daily wage of 50 soles ($15.50)," Sosa said from the mine in southern Peru. "We are almost certain we will join this strike," he added.
A company spokesperson said the company considers it impermissible for a miner to earn more than white-collar employees.
