The obvious excuse for the poor economy is Covid, but many people don't agree with the government's handling of the virus and the economic side-effects. Personally I think the government doesn't have a large enough majority and that a tax hike will be political suicide.
Retail is haemorrhaging and a GST hike would be very unpopular with that lobby group. Adding 2% to the GST rate is actually a 20% increase in GST, and the opposition and lobby group would attack it that way.
The liberals believe in MMT so my guess is they will keep selling treasury bonds and print more money and the debt problem will conveniently disappear.
