But it's not simply shifting money around.....If you mean paying to directors or alternatively paying to shareholders then you are correct, it doesn't change the balance sheet because both are a liability to the company. but as demonstrated by HZN example, dividends added value by both lifting the SP and provided substantial returns to SH's....whereas returns to directors obviously is a necessary negative spend. Therefore the Dividend brings a far better result.
Again, If you choose to leave the cash on the balance sheet as opposed to handing to SH's , then the company is in a better financial position , so no matter which way you look at it... its not just shifting money around.
