The quality of Baralaba coal is very good. It is ultra-low volatile, low ash and low moisture, which means high carbon and high energy - 7,600 kcal/kg which is extremely high.

Your second question is a bit complicated because whether a coal is suitable for coking is not just related to its quality - it is also related to its rank and composition which affect its ability to swell.

From a QUALITY point of view, Baralaba coal unground would be about on par with HCC.

But from a swelling point of view it's no good for coking, its Crucible Swelling Number is only 0.5, it needs to be 3 to 6. This is because it's ultra-low volatile - the rank is too high, the volatiles have been driven off, and the coal has passed through the coking window (where it would have good swelling) and out the other side.

So unground Baralaba PCI would realistically be a very high quality thermal coal. This is basically why it's suitable for PCI, because PCI requires high quality thermal coal!

    Hope that made sense?
