The company recovered the logging tools on Tuesday night and they were coated with oil, but it could not "log" the last 130 metres down the well in the Kapuni sands – exactly where it needed to test.
"There was quite a lot of oil," Mr Bennett said, including several kilograms of dark coloured waxy crude oil, coating the wire line connected to the logging equipment.
