If you have cash but there is no oil, then the sp will be worth the cash asset (but it may trade above or below it). Chance of a commercial successful oil find may only be 20-30% as an example so many will sell down their holdings just before drill results if the price has risen significantly. Many will have a holding of sorts going into drill results for the big reveal.
