disagree almost entirely with this.
PE syndicates regularly take public firms private if they believe their is low hanging fruit
that is management is poor and/or the balance sheet is lazy
PE would not take a portfolio position, they would make an outright approach
not saying PE would be interested in Metcash, just disputing your reasoning
leveraged buyouts for one...
