Peculiar Knob to lure locals

Some Roxby Downs? mine workers are expected to be lured further north when mining company WPG Resources begins work on a new open cut mine near Cooper Pedy this month.

The state government last week approved the $420 million Peculiar Knob iron ore mining project, the first mining venture to occur inside the Woomera Prohibited Area.

Executive chairman Bob Duffin said about 240 people would be employed at the main site and an extra 60 at Port Augusta and Port Pirie.

Mr Duffin said employees are being sourced from across South Australia and some applications have been received from the Roxby Downs area.

He said Peculiar Knob will be operating FIFO from Adelaide and may attract workers who preferred to have their families based in Adelaide.
