It is true!
My grandma did that one year back in the 80's to our orange tree (we had an outdoor toilet so it wasn't hard for her to do it in stealth).
Those oranges were the sweetest and juiciest oranges ever. Our next door neighbour use to climb the fence to knock off a couple (those were the times).
However, the tree died not long after :( lol.
