Australian Mines is experimenting with DES technology
Pre-Feasibility Study Commences on Alternative Nickel-Cobalt Laterite OreProcessing
Australian Mines Limited (“Australian Mines” or “the Company”) is pleased to advise it has commenced a Pre-Feasibility Study (“Study” or “Stage 2”)1 to commercialise an innovative, low-capex, scalable, and environmentally benign (non-HPAL)2 processing technology targeting the extraction of nickel, cobalt, and scandium from the lateritic ores at its Bell Creek–Minnamoolka (QLD) and Flemington (NSW) Projects. Background
Australian Mines recently completed a Proof-of-Concept Study (“Stage 1”) conducted by UK-based research and development (R&D) partner Descycle3 investigating the potential to unlock value in both its Bell Creek–Minnamoolka and Flemington Projects using deep eutectic solvents (DES), targeting the extraction of nickel, cobalt, and scandium from lateritic ores.
NOTE that Sconi is not included in this technology, even though Sconi samples were tested. Sconi is to be built with HPAL-MHP technology at this stage until further notice. The Stage 1 Study covered, at a concept level, incorporating a DES leaching technology as a potential alternative to existing treatment and recovery processes (such as HPAL)
NOTE That DES is aconcept level study and is a potential alternative to existing treatmentbeing HPAL. Nothing guaranteed on successful rollout at this stage.
Furthermore, this is a Proof-of-Concept Study (Thus not proven and working atscale) and as with all experimental technologies, finance can be challenging.
I also note that this technology is modular and scalable, it might bebeneficial in starting with a base case module of lower cost on site, addingmodules as the process is proven.
Time will tell and I am open to the possibilities, I wish this well.
In my opinion Flemington needs a technology like DES, The current mineralresources relative to grade % is very low and it is unlikely that an expensiveHPAL plant capex could be justified at a 0.24% nickel grade as a standaloneproposition.https://wcsecure.weblink.com.au/pdf/AUZ/02497171.pdf
