Ignore the physics of energy density at your peril. While I agree PV and wind should be pursued to their maximum logical efficacy the land area required can't be dismissed. To power just Australian households (not even industry) is something like 130,000 hectares. That said every rooftop that gets enough sun, especially in Australia, should be covered in them.
The most logical solution is renewables backed by batteries in combination with nuclear. Probably some natural gas for flexibility.
Also don't forget that those hectares of PVs need to be replaced every 15-20 years and they are toxic as all hell so that needs to be figured out (currently most of them are dumped on the 3rd world so god now how much damage they're doing to the environment and local population)
