I think your right that people owning a home would clearly make it much easier as Australia's rental market is nowhere near cheap. I assume it would take the vast majority of their pension.
Overseas "holidays" ? I doubt they could afford it but there would certainly be a case for them to try and bankroll a cheap ticket then live in overseas locations with far cheaper living expenses - rent, utilitys, food - probably the greatest risk at that age is moving away from Australian heslthcare. I think i remember them putting a limit on the amount of time pensioners can be out of the country for though ?
