I believe they were indeed buried. That is a really stupid move. The F111 would have been an awesome nuclear bomb delivery system with if's long range, supersonic ground hugging technology. I think the US insisted they be destroyed. No good having the next proxy target country with a capability like that. Better to drain the military budget for some subs to delivered after that war.
How many cities would you need to take out in the most urbanized country on earth, to wipe out most of the population. I know I am looking at the worst possible scenario, but that is justified looking at how nobody cares how many young Ukranians are slaughtered to reach the neocon policy goals.
